Permit Types
HPMV Permit
You should consider applying for an HPMV (High Productivity Motor Vehicle) permit if:
- You are carrying a divisible load.
- The mass exceeds 44,000kg and/or the maximum length dimensions allowed for standard vehicles but meets higher individual axle and axle group limits and is no wider or higher than a standard vehicle.

Specialist Vehicle Permit
You should consider applying for an Specialist Vehicle permit if:
- Your vehicle is a Specialist Vehicle (passenger service vehicle (bus), concrete mixer, rubbish compactor truck or ground spreader) as defined in the Vehicle Dimension and Mass Rule 2016.
- You are carrying a divisible load.
- An axle or axle set mass exceeds General Access axle or axle set mass limits but meets Specialist Vehicle axle or axle set mass limits.

Overweight Permit
You should consider applying for an Overweight permit if:
- You are carrying an indivisible or additional load.
- The mass exceeds 44,000kg but meets higher individual axle and axle group limits and is no wider or higher than a standard vehicle.

How to apply for a permit?
- Have your vehicle, load, and route information ready
- Enter your data into the online form
- Enter the geographical areas involved (see map) and type of permit you want, (see permit options)
- Attach any supporting documents as PDF documents
- Press submit
What happens next?
- Your application will be checked for completeness. If incomplete it will be returned to you
- Once accepted and complete it will be assessed by the relevant Permit Issuing Officers (PIOs)
- Your application will either be approved with condition, or declined with reasons. We may suggest other options to you. We will advise you of the outcome by E-mail from the Permitting Issuing Officers
- We aim to process your application within the time frames recommended in the NZTA Over-Weight Permit Manual or by the requested date as specified by the applicant
